Abortion

It takes place during the afternoon day on college campus. Erica and Lisa are leaving from their African Studies class. As they're leaving Erica asks Lisa how is she going to study for the test in a couple of weeks? Lisa replies, "I don't know I've had a lot on my mind lately". Erica replies sarcastically, "What's on your mind besides Kevin and this test coming up". While walking in the hallway Lisa gives Erica a look of disappointment as if she has something on her mind. Erica after noticing responds "Is their something wrong with you and Kevin". Lisa says nothing, but instead changes the subject to her and Erica and how they going prepare for the test. Erica says, "How about we meet at the library later on tonight and review for the test". Lisa replies, "I've got an appointment in couple of hours, so how about we meet at the library around 7:30 p.m.". Erica responds saying that's fine and I'll see you at the library later on.

Erica arrives first waiting for Lisa to arrive. A half-hour passes by and Erica has called Lisa cell phone at least three times now and no response. Lisa finally arrives a thirty-five minutes later apologizing for showing up so late. Erica says, "Don't worry about it is e

The problem that has been given in this issue is a sign of ambiguous. Ambiguous states that, "audience is unsure about what is at issue; or issue is partly honorable and partly difficult" (p.202, Ancient Rhetoric's, Crowley & Hawhee). Erica seems confused about Lisa's situation concerning the baby. Lisa understands that having the baby would imply tough time, but she also realizes that she's still young and has a lot of school left to take care of. The main problem with the concerns of abortion, the audience is confused whether she should have the baby or have an abortion. Erica is honorable to the fact that Lisa's pregnant, yet it's difficult for her to agree on Lisa having the baby because she is only twenty-one in college.

The exordium or better known as exordia is used by the rhetor to introduce or "establish their ethos as intelligent, reliable, and trustworthy people"(p. 201). The statement of the issue is Lisa having or not having an abortion. This is based on the facts in her story asking for advice from Erica. Erica presents the facts that Lisa is too young to bear a child at this point in time because of her age.

Groups opposed to abortion have attempted to document the existence of "post-abortion syndrome," which they claim has traits similar to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) demonstrated by some war veterans. In 1989, the American Psychological Association (APA) convened a panel of psychologists with extensive experience in this field to review the data. What was reported that the studies with the most scientifically rigorous research designs consistently found no trace of "post-abortion syndrome" and furthermore, no such syndrome is scientifically or medically recognized.

Both carry different meanings such as synecdoche refers to the substitution of the part for the whole. While metaphors is a word or meaning that is being substituted from one word to another. When discussing the issue of getting abortion the phrase "get rid of the baby" was used, this shows that the baby is the whole, meaning that "get rid of" is the substitute part for abortion. The rhetor is able to appeal to the audience's thoughts when the describing the thought process of deciding whether to have a baby or not.

verything o.k." Lisa looks Erica right in her eyes and starts crying, as people in the library start looking. Erica guides Lisa to the hallway saying, "Why are you crying baby, tell me what's wrong". Lisa says, "I'm pregnant and I don't know what to do? What should I do?" Erica replies, "I think you should have an abortion". Lisa calms down and ask why? Erica says, "Lisa your still young and in college, that's a lot for a young mother".

Almost half (43%) of the women in this country will have an abortion over the course of their lifetimes. That means that almost one out of every two women will have an abortion -a close friend, relative, maybe even you. Someone you know probably has already had an abortion. Yet, she may never talk to you about it. Our society is for the most part silent when it comes to the
