Abortion Controversy
Abortion has varied considerably by the differences in individual's social character and by the legal status. Society chooses to place emphasis on the disagreements of the pro-life and pro-choice groups, rather than the issues agreed on between the groups. Abortion is not a current abnormality, but a procedure common to human beings throughout history. Abortion has become a troublesome and irrationally argued issue, which has turned into legal and political turmoil, with no permanent resolution in sight. There have been many attempts to pass laws to stop abortions. "The U.S. Supreme Court, in Roe v. Wade, ruled that, during the first trimester of pregnancy, the state had no right to prohibit abortion and that, during the second trimester, the state could prohibit abortion unless the pregnancy endangered the mother's health or life" (Rein 112). The judgment was based upon the right of privacy, which rejected several anti-abortion acts. Regardless of one's opinion about the issue, women deserve the right to obtain safe, affordable health care without threats of violence or injury. History has proven that laws do not prevent abortion, but the number of abortions can be dramatically reduced by educating people on human sexuality and family planning. Abortions may also be reduced by making safe and effective contraception available to society. The current debates between the pro-life and pro-choice groups will never come to an end, but if the two groups ever combined forces, they could ratify laws for many of common problems for which they seek to resolve. Few people wish to be considered as either Pro-life or Pro-choice, but the courts have chosen to take the middle ground in the abortion controversy. If laws are passed to give the state the right to interfere, this means that the state may interfere in all situations. Many individuals are troubled on which stand to take on the issue because of all of the possible circumstances. "Many right to life advocates would hold that in certain medical difficulties, a fetus, through no fault of its own, can pose a threat to the life of the mother-her right to live, if you will" (Steffen 44). Some individuals support a woman's choice on whether or not to have an abortion, but do not in favor of using this practice for birth control.
