African Americans Facing Exclusion

African Americans have faced exclusion from our society since our country's beginning, having no rights or protection under a law that states, "All men are created equal". We have made great strides toward equality but there is still a great deal of prejudice and injustice that still goes on today. We see it in the news media often but it's the unpublicized subtle, silent prejudices that truly affect African Americans. These racial prejudices and injustices that go unpublicized and are kept under wraps from public view. There are those who believe that we have passed the problems of the past, because of the advancements achieved by African Americans. This attitude has sparked many controversies for the dismantling of affirmative action initiatives. The wide spread belief is that we have achieved diversity to the point that the program mentioned above is no longer needed. The general consensus is that African Americans have no need of such a program, because America is so


Discrimination is a major issue faced by African Americans in the work place. I will give a personal experience that I feel will help my point.

I was young but I knew this was not right and I was perplexed by his statement you sound so different on the phone. Now I know this is a clear example of subtle, veil prejudice. It was obvious that he was harboring silent prejudices that black Americans, cannot be articulate, and have knowledge in certain areas. To make a long story short I lost the job because I was black not because I wasn't qualified. The prejudices and beliefs the department head had of black Americans was the deciding factor not my skills. I had discussed this same topic in social studies class on base about two months ago.
