Alias Grace

The book, Alias Grace, is the very first book I read in a long, long time. When I saw that it was 550 pages, I was thinking, "How on earth will I ever be able to read this book in a month!" It didn't really help me much reading the back cover and seeing that it was about a girl. "Typical girly book" I thought! However, the mention of a crime made me interested.

I like the way that the author starts out the first chapter as the scene of the murder, and how every chapter in the books leads to this murder. The newspaper clippings were interesting too. I didn't know that this was a true story, so reading those excerpts made me more interested in the book. Margaret Atwood wrote the book in a style that anyone would be able to read, there wasn't any old English and the book was let me get to know the character better.

The book changed in the narrative form, every so often throughout the book. When Grace is talking to Dr. Jordan, you get the first person experience, such as, "Today Dr. Jordan looks more disarranged than usual, as if he has something on his mind; he does not seem to know quite how to begin." Then you get the third person narrative, "'It is kind of you to spare me the time' sa

From there on, everything went down hill for me. She wasn't let out of prison for another couple of years. And Simon left Canada and went to fight in the war in the US where he got amnesia and never was able to start his school for the mentally ill. That was really the last mention of him and I felt the author took him out of the novel too quickly. I didn't like it that Grace was trying to get in touch with him for such a long time and he never did respond and no one told her what happened to him. I guessed the fact is that I like happy endings, and the ending didn't go the way I planned.

The novel portrays Simon as someone who had many thoughts of sexual things. He thought that Grace was longing to be with him, and his thoughts about Mrs. Humphrey which later made him commit adultery, "Underneath her stiff dress there must be breasts, not starched and corset shaped, but made of soft flesh with nipples." I think Margaret put some sexuality in this book was to show that in the 1840's there was a very strict behavior on how a man and woman should act toward each other. Even Thomas Kenner and Nancy Montgomery were having a relationship without marriage, and as a result people looked upon them with contempt.

Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It kept me interested and made me see what 30 years of prison can do to someone and how her life ended up. I wish there was a sequel to this book because I want to read another book of hers. The next book that I'll read of hers is Cats Eye, hopefully it's as captivating as the book was. All my preconceived ideas that this book is meant only for girls is a thing of the past!

What gets me is this whole thing that she didn't remember it. The hypnosis determined that she was possessed by a demon. The question I
