Amazon Rainforest

With the advancements in technology, and humans becoming more populated and mobile, there became a need and desire for land expansion for agriculture and settlement. These demands for land led to the initial steps of "the transformation from an agrarian to an industrial society, the farms (people) abandoned were often reverted to woods" (Silver 116). The forests began to be cleared for "agriculture, settlements, and logging" (Silver 116). This deforestation process "has accelerated dramatically since World War II" (Silver 117). Although deforestation has been beneficial to humanity for various reasons, the rapid acceleration of deforestation, particularly in the Amazon Rainforest region, has caused numerous global climate changes, particularly in the water cycle and greenhouse effect.

Characteristics of the Amazon Rainforest region

The Amazon Rainforest is the largest rainforest left of earth; it is about the size of Australia and covers several countries around Brazil. Estimated to have been formed "500 to 200 million years ago," (Hui) the Amazon Rainforest has been an important asset to people all over the world. From our dai

Deforestation and resulting global climate changes

The rainforests of the world play an important role in the water cycle. Climate is affected "significantly, as rain is recycled back into the clouds as (the forest) receives rainfall" (Deforestation: Causes and Solutions). Droughts and flooding "become serious problems, as rainwater travels quickly through the ground without the forest to regulate it" (Deforestation: Causes and Solutions). Unlike many assumptions of exotic, lavish growth " the soils that support (the forests) are remarkably unproductive" (Silver 120). When a forest is cleared, it begins a desertification process. The soil is quickly damaged "as heavy rainfall and high sunlight" (Hui) rein on these clearings. When this happens, regeneration of the forests is more difficult and time consuming.

For millions of years, the world's rainforests have aided in improvements of lifestyles. From our daily diets, to medical discoveries, rainforests have impacted all of our lives. However, with our advancements, humans have come to exploit the resources we depend on so much. With these exploitation's, we have caused global climate changes. As part of the "global weather system," (Defenders of the Rainforest) deforestation of the rainforests has caused "drought, flooding, and soil erosion in areas where such events were previously rare" (Defenders of the Rainforest). Deforestation has altered the global water cycle and influenced global warming. These initial effects of deforestation are just a start to the effects of deforestation in changing the global climate. As "stewards of the planet," (Silver 128) humans have a "responsibility for maintaining its diversity" (Silve
