Analysis of Public Relations

Running head: AN ANALYSIS OF THE PUBLIC RELATIONS

This is a summary and an analysis of the public relations that are present at Charleston high school. Most of the information obtained is general knowledge or obtained through interviews. The analysis is accompanied by many recommendations for improving the school public relations.

Charleston high school is located in the east section of Charleston, Illinois. Charleston is located in east central Illinois and is also the home of Eastern Illinois University. Charleston has a population about twenty thousand people. Half of this population is college students. While EIU is a major university, it surprisingly does not greatly influence Charleston High School. The major composition of people in Charleston represent the middleclass socio-economic cohort. Charleston high school educates about a thousand students. Charleston High School does not have many different cohorts. One cohort that does peek its head through does so only in the faculty. It appears that a lot of the teachers are from the area. This seems to have made things stagnant in the past. Charleston High School has hired a new principal to take the place of Mr. Tucker who re


One might recommend him to talk to school board members and ask their advice. He could take them to an informal lunch to show appreciation or invite them to school events. Another suggestion might be that he speak well of them in the media whenever possible. He should also keep the lines of communication current by doing periodic presentations to the board informing them of current issues (success and failures) in the school. He might ask what their concerns are or invite them to events. He has to keep them informed of the school's progress. Holding informal meetings with the district and union management will help the transition go more smoothly.

Mrs. Goldacker talked about the student committee and elaborated that it might be working. She talked about the school hosting several events throughout the year. She had not heard about the "Principal's Evening" that Mr. Broome discussed about in his interview. Throughout the interview with Mrs. Goldacker, it seems as if the public relations aspect was being put on the shoulders of the individual teachers. She stated that with no parent teacher conferences and many of the parents not participating in some part of the school, it was up to the teacher to make contact with the parents. She made a point that most of the parents only hear from the school if there is a problem. She talked about numerous stories of parents that would come to the school angry because their son or daughter had received a failing grade for the semester. She said that many of those parents had no concept that their son or daughter was having any difficulty at all. Mrs. Goldacker explained that an underlying belief at the school is that of student responsibility. This is what leads to parents being uninformed.

In summary, one has to remember that a high school is not owned by anyone, this includes the principal. It is a community facility that is merely operated by teachers, administrators, and staff. Communication between the community and the school is an absolute must in order to keep things operating smoothly. A principal must understand that the community is a partner that must be utilized in educating students. A principal has to maintain the frame of mind that he or she does what they do for the kids and make use of all of the resources provided.

Another facet of the public relations at Charleston high school that pertains to the listening issue is the Principal's Evening. This is a chance for anyone to express anything that he or she might want to say. Mr. Broom put s on a pot of coffee once a month and leaves his door open.
