Arab Isreali Conflict

I am going to be writing my research paper on the ongoing conflict between the Arabs and the Israelis. These two groups of people have been fighting from as far back in time that the history books go, but for my paper I will just concentrate on the past 200 or so years. This argument has its roots in religion. The Jewish people believe that land in Palestine is their holy land and is rightfully theirs. The Palestinians do not want to give up their land because they have been living there for hundreds of years and if it is the Jewish holy land it does not matter because they are there now. This is the main bases behind the conflict. There are also many underlying themes, such as, the Jewish people are a scattered people and they want a place they can call theirs, which is why they are also trying to claim the land in Palestine. Also the Palestinians feel threatened by the Jewish belief in Zionism. Palestinians think that Zionism will threaten their political aspirations. !

Another reason the Palestinians do not want to allow the Jews into Palestine is because they believe that the benefits foreigners receive are unfair.

First of all in my paper I will explain the background of these two groups of people. I will tell wher

e each group is coming from before the conflict really starts to heat up. After that I will talk about what has happened in the conflict post World War II or 1948. Here I will talk about military actions and any religious aspects that pertain to the subject matter. Lastly I will tell about what the future looks like for each group and try to explain what may happen in the future.

On June 21, 1982 Israel attacked Lebanon in attempts to destroy the PLO Located there. The Israeli onslaught was over by weeks end, but by then at least 60,000 troops lead by 500 tanks had swept across the Lebanese border. Within 48 hours the Israelis had eliminated many of the PLO's long ranged Soviet built artillery. Although Israel did not fully accomplish their intended goal of invading Lebanon they did manage to get their point across about how they felt about the PLO

On September 20,1993 the groundbreaking Oslo Accords were agreed upon by both the PLO And the Israelis. The Oslo Accords provided for mutual recognition between Israel and the PLO, limited self rule for the Palestinians, and promise of a final settlement sometime in the near future, presumably by establishing a Palestinian state. Then on October 31, 1994 Jordan and Israel also came to a peace agreement. On November 13, 1995 a Jewish extremist assassinated Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, and rightist Benjamin Netanyahu won the subsequent election. This slowed the down the peace process but eventually it proceeded.

In May of 1964 a group called the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) started making a voice for themselves. They claimed to be the sole representative of the Palestinian people, the PLO vowed to reclaim their land and destroy the state of Israel. Tensions again began to flare with Egypt and Jordan again allying under a joint military command. On June 5, 1967 Israeli Army Chief of Staff Yitzhak Rabin launched a strike on Arab forces. The importance of this war cannot be overstated. This war introduced new critical elements into the Arab-Israeli conflict. In this war Israel again defeated Palestine and this time they took control of five Arab territories including, the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip. The Israelis more than doubled the size of the state of Israel just by taking control of the Sinai Peninsula. During the June war the Israelis also took control of a territory called The West Bank. In the West Bank was eastern Jerusalem which was part of what Jews considered their holy land. So this was a big accomplishment for the Israeli forces. Another important day that came from the June war was October 6, 1947. On this day the British forces that had been in Palestine for 25 years announced that they were pulling out of Palestine for good, and leaving the peace process in the Middle East to the United Nations. With the help of the United Nations the two sides still were unable to come to a peace agreement. During this chaotic period of time is when Jewish Age
