Asturias, The Spanish Autonomy

Spain is a country filled with diverse cultures and many exciting sights. These sights can be seen in the most rural part of the country or the most densely populated. Asturias is an autonomy located in the North West portion of Spain. Autonomies are self-governing bodies, which are comparable to the "States" of the United States. For those of you who aren't familiar with Spain, Asturias lies between Glacia and Basque Country. In 1978 it was granted a pre-autonomy regime and on January 11th 1982 its Autonomy Statute came into effect. This officially gave the historic name of Principality of Asturias.

The three largest cities in Asturias are Oviedo, Gijon, and Aviles. The region's capital, Oviedo, located more or less at its geographical center, is especially remarkable for its pre-roman monuments and its great cathedral. Gijon is a historic city, founded by Romans, and is today one of the most important sea-ports and offers active cultural life. Aviles is one of the oldest settlements of the area, is of great economical importance too, but conserves as well its traditional style. Some seem refer to it as the "industrial capital" of the autonomy.

There really is no typical dress pattern among the residents of Asturias. Asturias seems to blend with the rest of the country as far as fashion statements are concerned.

Asturias has a wide range of sports, which are played throughout the region. One popular sport is mountain climbing. There are many challenging cliffs to venture up since Asturias lies in the middle of the Picos de Europa, a moderately large mountain range. There is also a major ski resort in Asturias called Pajares. Many people from across the country go there to ski in the winter. Fishermen from all over Europe come to Asturias every year to catch salmon in the Asturian Rivers, such as, the Narcea, Sella, Canero, and Deva-Cares. These rivers have been known by many fishermen abroad to be full of fish.

Even from its early rebellious stage, Asturias has always been prosperous. Let's hope that this prosperity will continue on for we wish not to lose such a precious part of our world.

The most widely known Asturian Holiday occurs on August the 4rd. It is simply known as the celebration of "Asturias Day". The importance of this day is reflected by the fact that all
