Autism
Sleep deficiency, having a high pain and fear thresh hold, poor social skills and echolalia are all common characteristics of autism. Autism is a "neurobiological disorder" that impairs communication and social skills. There is as of yet no clear consensus on the exact cause of autism. Still there are many theories and assumptions made by parents and their physicians. This lack of substantial information of the subject may by credited to the fact that the disease was not recognized until the World War II era. This has left many concerned parents uncertain as to what to do about the long term care of their children with special needs. Three of those children are Charlie, Austin, and Jimmy. This paper will discuss and analyze the terms and characteristics of each of the three unique boys' disorder. Charlie was diagnosed with autism at the age of two. His symptoms included "tantrums where he would flip himself backwards", staring at objects for long periods of time, subtle changes in routine, and inadequate speech for his age norms. Concern was first raised that Charlie may be autistic when his parents, concerned with his abnormal speaking patterns, took him for a speech evaluation. Charlie was then refereed to a child-dev
In conclusion Autism is undoubtedly a tireless and frustrating disease for both the patient and their family. As stated previously there is currently no plausible explanation as to how autism occurs, nor is there a cure or specific treatment supported by the medical community. Perhaps a cure could one day be possible if Autism would receive more than 5% of the government research funding. I feel that expanded research funds, and more expectancy for future capabilities for Autistic children will put us on the right path for making life normal for autistic children and their families. Last is Jimmy, a 4 1/2-year-old boy whose parents were alerted of his disorder by basically the same signals as Charlie and Austin's parents. Just as Austin, Jimmy appeared to be developing normal; he sat a 7 months and walked at thirteen. Jimmy's mother also reports no problems during pregnancy. Approximately when Jimmy reached 15 months his vocabulary began to decline. Other noticed signs were that he did not adapt well to change, he would throw tantrums whenever cared for by someone other than his mother, and he would not play with children other than his four-year old brother. Jimmy's case was evaluated carefully by numerous doctors and man
