Be Scared for Your Kids

A detailed Summary of Be Scared for Your Kids

At the tender age of seventeen, my cousin's life was ended. The uncanny similarities between my cousin's death and the death of Al Sicherman's son in "A Father's Plea: Be Scared for Your Kids" brought back the horrifying pain I hoped never to experience again. I was overtaken with the all too familiar sorrow and pain Al Sicherman expressed over the death of his son. While using the dangerous drug LSD, Al Sicherman's son fell out of his dorm window and died on impact. It is with the death of my cousin that I may relate to Al Sicherman. I found that this was the first time Eric had experienced heroin, and the last. Life is full of experiences, both positive and negative. Sharing these experiences is how we may teach others the devastating power of this mind-altering drug.

The darkest day of my life had begun. It was Saturday morning, and as usual my mom came into my room to wake me up. Immediately I knew something was seriously wrong from looking at her face, so pale it sent shivers down my spine. She said nothing, and hugged me so hard I was on the verge of suffocation. It was then she explained to me, in-between bursts of heart piercing crying, that my cousin was found dead on the floor of his garage. Immediat

I remember pulling up to Eric's house, and seeing the garage was covered in police tape. I kept asking myself: Why was there police tape? What happened? My sister and I walked up to the house with painful curiosity, and found our aunt and uncle both sitting on the deck behind the garage. After just loosing their only child, we found them both visibly distraught and unable to stop crying. My uncle Ken looked as though someone had just ripped his heart out. His face so pale and his posture so decrepit it was a wonder he was still breathing. With my aunt and uncle this distraught, I decided it would be best to find out from the police officers in the garage what happened. As I stepped in the back door to the garage I heard my aunt scream: "Adam no!" But it was too late, I had already seen what made the death of my cousin different from the death of Al Sicherman's son. I stepped into the garage, and saw what has and will haunt me for the rest of my life. On the floor, wrapped in an evidence bag, was the shotgun Eric received last year for Christmas from my uncle. When I saw that gun, I immediately turned away and found myself starring at my uncle's new Ford F150 pickup; the windshield and hood covered in dried blood. After seeing what no person ever should, I felt sicker than ever.

I learned that my uncle had shared many of the same thoughts and feelings as Al Sicherman over the loss of a son. My uncle could not believe that his own son would ever try drugs, especially heroin. He too informed Eric of the dangers of drugs, and yet Eric obviously didn't listen. I feel Al Sicherman said it best: "I'm not surprised that kids don't listen to their parents about drugs. Adults' standards of risk are different from theirs, and they know it;
