Becoming a Pilot
On the Saturday morning of my first flight, I woke up with anticipation of what was to come. During the previous night, I had been dreaming of my recent activities. The week before, I had talked to an Air Force recruiter. During the conversation, I told him of my desire to join the USAF. Also, I had mentioned to him that during the first three years I was enlisted, I would be working towards my bachelor's degree. (The reason that I would do so is because you must have a bachelor's degree prior to flying in the military.) He then gave all the information that I had shared with him, to my mother and father. My mother, being the sweetest person in the world, went right out and bought me an introductory flight lesson. On the Friday night before my first flight, she handed me an envelope, and I read the certificate out loud. I couldn't believe that I was to start flying that next morning. She said, "If you want to become a pilot, you might want to see if you like it firs!t." When I took off for the first time it was the greatest feeling ever. As I search other places to find out what lay ahead in my career choice of aviation, I sought to find out what exactly pilots do. There are many different types of pilots. There are leisure, private, commercial, and military pilots. These pilots operate aircraft to transport passengers, freight, and mail (Being a Pilot, 104). They also have other commercial duties such as crop-dusting. As an airline pilot, I would work with a flight crew. The captain supervises the other members of the crew, and acts as the PIC (pilot in command). As the PIC everything must be run past him, and he has the final say over all issues while in flight (Philippsen, PI). As with the private pilot, the captain's work begins before the plane starts. He/she arrives at the airport, checks in for the flight, reads the notices, and checks the latest weather information. While they check the weather, they examine the reports, and note any severe weather. The captain then makes any changes needed in the flight plan. The goal of receiving my private pilot's license this summer, before I leave to go into the Air Force, is very important to me. Above all I will be sure to get information on the specific duties of a pilot. Also, I have yet to figure out approximately how much it will cost me to achieve me to get my license. I will also need to figure out what is to be learned in ground school. So far, I have only attended one class. It started on Wednesday, February 13, 2002, and it is every Wednesday for several weeks. As well as being my flight instructor, Scott Philippsen, will also be my teacher in ground school. As well, he will be the subject of my personal interview. I will attempt to find out how long it took him to, from start to finish, attain his private pilot's certificate. Hopefully I will find specific details relating to cost, difficulty and enjoyment pertaining to one's training. Also, I would like to know if he enjoys the fact that he is a pilot, or if he regrets the path he chose.
