On August 25, 1991 the Republic of Belarus gained its independence from the Soviet Union.The Republic of Belarus had recognized the city of Minsk as its capital.

Landlocked in Eastern Europe, Belarus has a total area of 207,600 sq km, including no appreciable water areas. Belarus has 3,098 km of borderline adjacent to 5 different countries. Belarus is mainly comprised generally of flat land with a good deal of marshland. This land can be dived into 5 land uses: arable land 29%, permanent crops 1%, permanent pastures 15%, forests and woodland 34%, other 21% (1993 est.). Belarus generally has cool and moist summers with cold and sometimes harsh winters. Belarus' main natural resources consist of peat deposits, forests, and small quantities of natural gas and oil. Since Minsk's liberation in 1944 its population has steadily increased from 50,000 to 1,672,000 people as (1995 est.), qualifying it as the largest city in Belarus. Belarus' main form of transportation is the highway with 63,355 km of highway. Although 2,788 km of these highways are unpaved, making them hard to negotiate in wet weather. Belarus has developed a broad and widely used river and canal system, but has no official data regarding them. Only 33 of Belarus' 136 airports have paved runways, and of those 33 only 2 extend past the measurements of 3,047m. The rail systems of Belarus only reach a grand total of 5,523km, all of this being 1.520-m gauge.

The currency of Belarus is Belarusian ruble. The exchange rate of the Belarusian ruble is 1,180 rubles to every US dollar and the country's GDP is approximately 78.8 billion dollars. Belarus' main exports are foodstuffs, chemicals, metals, textiles, and machinery; 66% of all Belarus' exports go to Russia. Of Belarus' 10.35 million people 4.8 million are part of the labor force; there is only a 2.1 % unemployment rate in Belarus. Contrary to these low unemployment rates 22% of Belarus' population is considered below the poverty line.
