Brighton Beach Memoirs
A detailed Summary of Brighton Beach Memoirs
Brighten Beach Memoirs is a play that is based on a family who is living in Brooklyn, New York and dealing with the trials of being a family in the 1930's. Throughout the book we are shown the uncertainties in life that the family is forced to live with everyday. The characters in the play are forced to awaken to things about themselves that they were unaware of. In Brighten Beach Memoirs Eugene awakens to the facts about his feelings about his brother Stanley, and Kate awakens to the fact that she has feelings that are negative about her sister Blanche. An awakening is an opening for the characters to discover something new about themselves.
The first part of Brighten Beach Memoirs shows where Eugene was unaware about his real feelings for his brother. He didn't realize that he needed his brother to be part of his life in order to make it successfully through life. An example of this is when Stanley comes home from his job and tells Eugene how he has lost his job. " Me and my boss had other things to talk about. I'm in trouble, Eug. I mean really big trouble. I got fired today!." (23) This quote shows you when Stanley has come home and tells Eugene about his problems. Stanley doesn't tell his parents

There are many Similarities and Differences in these two awakenings of these characters. Some of the Similarities are that both of the characters grow from there awakenings by the end of the play. Some of the Differences are that Eugene's awakening is more of a good awakening throughout the entire play while Kate's awakening causes problems at some points of the play.
In the Beginning of Brighton Beach Memoirs Kate was unaware that she had negative feelings for Blanche, her sister. She didn't realize that she could feel in the negative for her own sister. We see Kate taking care of Blanche in the first part of the play. She was acting more as her mother than as her sister to her. "Would it kill you to put a light on?." (11) This is showing that Kate is trying to take care of Blanche and tell her to put a light on. This statement would seem like a statement that a mother would make to their child not a sister to a sister. The only thing that Blanche can say is " I don't have to run up electric bills. I owe you and jack enough as it is." (11) So we see that blanche is being kind to Kate and not spend any more money than she already has but Kate doesn't care she would rather her turn on the lights than go blind from having no lights on. Blanche is sure that some day she is going to pay Kate and Jack back for everything that they have ever given her and her children. Kate begins to awaken to the fact that her and Blanche have problems with each other. Kate starts to realize this after her and Blanche get into a fight about Blanche going out on a date with Mr. Murphy because Kate doesn't approve of him. " Who's Mr. Murphy?...Oh, my God! I don't understand you. Your going to dinner with that man?." (62) This is showing that Kate doesn't approve of Blanche going out with Mr. Murphy even through Kate doesn't even know him this is also showing that Kate is starting to show her true feelings that she is starting to show for Blanche.
first, he tells Eugene that shows you the growing of their relationship with each other. After Stanley states that Eugene tries to help him to find out what he should do. Eugene begins to awaken to the fact that he needs Stanley to learn from and that Stanley is beginning to show that he needs Eugene too. When Stanley decides he is going to write the letter to his boss he goes to Eugene again to ask him if he will help him to write the letter with him. Stanley needs the help with writing the letter to his boss because he isn't as intellectually smart as Eugene is. He goes to Eugene to ask him to help. "...You want to help me? You're good at those things." (73) This is showing that Stanley needs Eugene and then Eugene says he will help him if he tells him more about girls. "I don't want money....Tell me what Nora looked
