Certification of Teachers
It is the first day of school and a student walks into his or her very first class. In this classroom there are over thirty other children. Next, the teacher walks in; it is her first day also. She has not been prepared in full for the challenges she will face, for example a large class size. Part of the reason she is not fully prepared is because teacher certification does not have high enough standards to prepare new teachers for all the challenges they might face. Education has become vital to our nation. The nation's strength and well being is resting in the hands of educators. Throughout history in-service teacher education received has decreased in the amount of attention (Goodlad 3-4). Certification of school personnel needs to have higher standards, teachers would be fully prepared for what they will face, students will learn in a better environment, less students would resort or be inclined to be home schooled over public schooling, and students looking into the education field will have a head start on being prepared for the challenges they them self will face. Teachers certification needs to have higher standards because of the fact that the teachers that are starting now are not fu
Since the certification of school personnel has such low standards certain families consider the possibilities of home schooling over public schooling. "No one suffering from an acute case of appendicitis would deliberately entrust the healing of his body to an unqualified physician. Similarly no parent seeking an education for his child, suited to the economic, political and social realities of today, would deliberately entrust the child to an unqualified teacher or school administrator."(Hopkins 1) Possibly one of the most common reasons a parent decides to home school his or her child is because there are many under qualified teachers and parents decide since they can not trust the teachers in the school they will teach their children instead. Also, another possible reason parents home school their children is because some children do not work well in a large classroom with many other students. Some children need individual help and the best way to get that attention is home schooling. Homeschooling's academic worth is hotly contested by researchers, educators, and parents. It is difficult to obtain a representative sample of homeschooled children, and researchers can not say for certain whether these children would do better or worse in a public or private school. Scores of homeschoolers who have taken state-mandated tests or who have provided their results to researchers indicate that while some homeschoolers test below average, a larger number test above that mark. (Lines 3) "We believe that the best hope for a self-renewing society is a self-renewing individual who has been provided with every possible opportunity to develop his unique talents and capabilities."(Goodlad 9-10) Every parent wants what is best for his or her child and that means the best education they can get. If teachers are not properly taught themselves or prepared for what they must face it produces a poor outlook on the education that is provided
