Cesar E. Chavez

When a person hears the name Cesar Chavez, a person thinks of a man's fight for his people. As a fellow human being I am proud that he was Hispanic just like me. Well for me he wasn't a regular Jose but someone with the power and strength to say I had it with what was going on, for that I call him a wonderful and brave man.

The story of Cesar Chavez begins in Yuma, Arizona. He was born March 31,1927. Cesar Estrada Chavez was names after his grandfather Cesario Chavez. As a small child Cesar learned many things. As a child Cesar learned first hand how hard it was to be a brown man in a white man's land. Cesar's family, The Chavez family, was swindled from their house and farm by dishonest whites. Cesar learned a lesson about injustice that he would later in counter. Cesar said "the love for justice that is in us is not only the best part of our being but it also the most true to our nature". Like I said this man had the mentality of someone you read in "LA OPINION". In my dark eyes Cesar was "the Mexican", white people feared him left and right and prayed that Cesar would look the other way or they would loose their fortune. To me that is an accomplishment beyond a lot of people's reach. As a young child Cesar did

Workers and inforce plant owners to create better conditions for all farm workers. In 1965 grape pickers were making an average of $. 90 /hour and plus $. 10 per basket they picked. For the hard work they did they got paid beyond bad, plus you couldn't say nothing because if you did you would loose your job and that was the only thing they could do because they couldn't speak English. I'm glad that someone did something about it because when I ask my dad about his past he tells me when he got here from Mexico mostly all his jobs he was picker as well. He tells me stories of how back breaking it was and how bad the conditions were. Working conditions during those days were ignored by the growers. At one farm the boss made the workers drink from the same cup "a beer cup" in the field during their water break. Also there was no plumbing for the workers and portable field toilets. So if you had to go to the restroom you had to go deal with it. Workers also paid $2.00 or more per d!

As Luis Valdez said "Cesar we have come to plant your heart like a seed, the farm workers shall harvest in the seed your memory". His contributions to this nation were great. He helped men and women feed their families with their wages and also created the WIC program that helps families in need of not being able to feed their families. Cesar was a great man in humanity, like all those other people before him he made a point and like that gives hope to those in need of it in times of need.

not like school that much, I mean I don't either, but his reasons were much better that mine because all of the teachers were Anglos and only spoke English, and that wasn't it, if the school staff caught u speaking Spanish they would hit you with a size 12 inch ruler. Cesar and his brother attended from 38 schools to 70 schools. Cesar only graduated from the 8th grade and could not attend high school because his father, Librado, had an accident and could not work because of it. So as the oldest child of the family Cesar put away his plans for the future to support his family both mentally and physically. As Chavez grew older he started back his journey in academics. He later believed that "the end of all education should surely be service to others". In 1944 Cesar Chavez joined the navy. In the navy as well we encountered racism. In his words he remembers being treated different because of his background. After serving his country Chavez married Helena Fabela in 1948. Throughout their marriage they had 15 kids together. As well as being a fighter he was the man! Chavez was a man witched listened to hid head and heart. He was very interested in reading St. Francis and Gandhi's work. He studied their actions toward some of the obstacles they encountered. All of Cesar's life he was the next-door neighbor to discrimination. He wasn't the only one. During that time in the great United States there was
