Charles A. Lindbergh
During the 1920's, one of the most exciting events that occurred was the solo flight made by Charles A. Lindbergh across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927. He flew from New York to Paris and became very famous for this outstanding achievement. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 4, 1902 and grew up on a family farm in Rapid Falls, Minnesota (ThinkQuest). He was named after his father, Charles Augustus Lindbergh, Sr. who was a lawyer and a congressman for the state of Minnesota. His mother's name was Evangeling Land Lodge and he was the only child that she had. When Lindbergh was eighteen, he attended the University of Wisconsin where he studied mechanical engineering. During this time period, he became very interested in the field of aviation. He wanted to become a fighter pilot so he decided to join the United States Army in 1924. He accomplished his goal by graduating as the top pilot in his class. I think that Charles Lindbergh was an interesting man because he had a lot to offer in the field of aviation, which helped bring us to where we are today. He was intelligent and willing to take risks to reach his goals. I think at some point in our lives, we all have to take a risk now or then in order to succeed. During this time period, no one came close to the fame that Lindbergh experienced. He was definitely a genius when it came to aviation and mechanics. He used his knowledge to help design several planes from simple to supersonic jets. He also advised many countries on which models to use for their fleets. After his historic flight, he wrote a book called "We". It was all about his transatlantic flight and what he meant by his title was himself and the "Spirit of St. Louis". After his book was published, he wanted to support another earlier inventor named Daniel Guggenheim (ThinkQuest). He then convinced Guggenheim to help him to support Robert Goodard's work he was doing with rockets. Goodard's work would result in the development of missiles, satellites, and space travel. On May 21, 1927, Charles Lindbergh flew from Roosevelt Field on Long Island to Le Bourget Airport in Paris. It took him a total of thirty-three and a half hours to fly across the Atlantic Ocean non-stop.
