Charlie Chaplin
One night, a while back, I had trouble sleeping. So like I always do, I got out of bed, went to the living room and turned on the TV. When I can't sleep I watch one of two things, cartoons or old movies. I changed the channel to the one that plays the old movies. There was a black and white movie on. I looked it up it the TV Guide and it said, "Charlie Chaplin Marathon." It was in the middle of the movie called, "Lime Light." After that was over they played, "City Lights." I fell asleep after that movie was over so I didn't see anymore of his films. I was completely mesmerized by that movie. He was very creative, and he uses every emotion in his films. That's how I found out about Charlie Chaplin. I wanted to find out more about his films and his life, so I checked out Chaplin The Movies & Charlie by David Jacobs. While I read my book I learned more and more about him. I never imagined that his life was so difficult. Charles Spencer Chaplin was born on April 16th 1889 in London. His mother, Hannah Hill, and father, Charles Chaplin senior, were both entertainers. Hannah was a singer and Charles Sr. did a bit of everything, singing, dancing, etc. His father was also a heavy drinker. The start of their horrible
Charlie met his new leading lady in 1924; she would be his leading lady in his new movie, "Gold Rush." Her name was Lita Grey; her screen name was Lolita MacMurry. She was only 12 years old; Charlie was 35. That's a huge age gap of 19 years. Charlie started to like her and by the time she was 16 she was pregnant and she and Charlie were married. This was his second marriage. Charlie had two children with Lita and both were boys. They named his first son Charles Jr. and the second was named Sydney after his older brother. Soon into their marriage Lita's mother started to get too involved in their lives, mostly Charlie's. One evening Charlie came home and Lita and her mother had his house packed with people of whom Charlie didn't even know. Charlie snapped and told the guests to leave. Lita and her mother overreacted and left taking the two boys with them. Lita filed for a divorce from Charlie. During the divorce Lita accused Charlie of unspeakable cruelty and inhuma! Charlie's and Sydney's relationship growing closer and closer through time. n crimes. Lita's mother took the story to the newspapers. He became so depressed that his colleagues feared he would commit suicide. He fled to New York to see his lawyer. His lawyer took one look at him and then called a team of doctors. He was in a state of emotional collapse. Lita had so much against Charlie at the time that she had his studio shut down. He became more and more emotionally stressed. Sydney ended up getting a contract as a stand up comedian for Keystone. After Sydney's contract was over he devoted himself to Charlie's business affairs. Sydney took care of all of Charlie's money. He was a brilliant businessman. Charlie had become the forth-richest figures in show business. His father was a heavy drinker, and one day he left and never came back. He left Hannah with one year old Charlie and four year old Sydney, his older brother, and his best friend. Hannah was left with little money and finally they were broke. Hannah and the boys had to move to a workhouse in 1895. All the children were separated from their parents at the workhouse. Parents were sent to one part of the workhouse and the children another part. Hannah was very close to her boys and the pain of separation caused Hannah to have a nervous breakdown and she was sent to an insane asylum. Charlie knew he needed a leading lady; it was essential to the company, so he started the search. He was most attracted to innocence. He searched in Chicago but was unable to find an actress with the qualities he wanted. He continued to search in Niles, California. He talked to his colleagues at Essanay and one said that he knew of someone that might be suitable in San Francisco. Her name was Edna Purviance, a 19-year-old
