Chemical and Biological Weapons
Chemical weapons are chemical agents of warfare taken to be chemical substances, whether gaseous, liquid, or solid, which might be harmful because of their direct toxic effect on human, animals, and plants. A chemical agent is a chemical substance, which is intended for use in military operations to kill or seriously injure people because of its physiological effects. Chemical weapons can be classified into two main categories by their instability, persistent and non-persistent agents. A persistent agent continues to present a hazard for a considerable period of time after its delivery. It remains as a contact hazard or by vaporizing over a period of time to produce a hazard by inhalation. A non-persistent agent breaks up rapidly after its release and presents an immediate but short-lived hazard. They are released as airborne particles, liquids and gasses. Intoxication usually results from the inhalation of the chemical agent. The effectiveness of a chemical weapon is the capacity of an agent to produce the maximum number of casualties or amount of disruption of operations with the least amount of agent. There are many factors that can influence the effectiveness of a chemical agent: such as the amount of the agent release, en
Botulinal toxins are produced by a microscopic organism and are a deadly poison even if taken in small doses that can be absorbed through the skin, lungs, eyes and mucous membranes. It can be distributed through aerosol methods, water, and food. BT is an efficient killer with the initial symptoms of dizziness and general weakness. Frothing is also common. Biological weapons are infectious agents such as a bacteria or virus and are used intentionally to inflict harm on others. These weapons include the use of biologically derived toxins, poisons and microorganisms. Biological weapons are immensely destructive. These weapons have been the regular targets of arms controls efforts. Mycotoxins are produced by fungi of various genera. The toxins, protein in nature, have a low molecular weight. They also contain food refusal and emetic factors. Mycotoxins are highly persistent and stable for long periods of time. 0.5mg of the poison is enough to kill half the exposed humans. The skin of the victims can be irritated if the skin is exposed to the toxins. Effects are also found on central nervous, circulatory, and reproductive systems. 1) There is fear of the unknown effects of new biological agents that could produce genetic manipulations. 2) The production of Biological weapons and Chemical weapons are fairly cheap and can be easily hidden under the cover
