Child Abuse

Child abuse is forced omission of a caretaker or a parent that causes a child to be hurt or killed. Child abuse is a major problem in todays society. Some people think it is okay or don't see anything wrong with abusing a child, other do see something wrong with it.

Sexual abuse is taking advantage of a child with the intent to sexually stimulate a child or tho use a child to sexually stimulate ones self. Sexual abuse by a family member or someone who has a kinship role in the childs life is considered incest. This can be a biological mother, father, brother, sister, foster parent or member of the family through marriage. The legal definition of incest is sexual intercourse between people who are blood related. Abuse is divided into outside abusers and inside abusers. An inside abuser is one who is in the family, otherwise known as incest. An outside abuser that is not related to the victim, such as a teacher, coach, or doctor. This is considred sexual abuse because the adult was in charge of the victim at the time of the incident. One in every three women will be abused by someone outside of the family before she is eighteen. It is different if someone who does not have legal custody of the child and was not in


Prevention of Child Abuse claims that every two minutes a child is attacked by one or both parents. Infants are most likely going to die from severe abuse. Infancy accounts for seventy-four percent of deaths caused by abuse. Teenage abuse is more frequent but is less severe(Mufson, 3).

The U.S. Congress in the Family Service Act of 1988 defines physical abuse as "physical...injury...[or]negligent treatment or maltreatment of a child under the age of 18 by a person who is responsible for the child's welfare under circumstances which indicate that the child's health or welfare is harmed or threatened thereby." (Mufson, 25).

People believe that if an abused child is left untreated, may grow up as a delinquent, murderer, or they may even abused their own children. Criminologist, Cathy S. Wisdom, claims that neglected children have a high chance of adult criminality(Levinson, 68). One-third of all child abuse cases are committed by another child. Most children can be treated thoroughly through counseling. Fifty percent of adult that are arrested for sex crimes began at an early age(Leone, 51).
