If we were all to rebel against what we've always known to be accepted, if we were to completely ignore the teachings of our elders and do the things we've been taught to be "evil" and "sinister", what would happen? This situation is what occurs in a small and tranquil French town in the movie "Chocolat". This was a town which had its own rituals, its own ways of dealing with conflicts, and its own way of dealing with other people. This was the only way the people of this town had ever known to live their lives. So you can imagine the spectacle that arose when an "outsider" named Vien, and her daughter Anouk, moved themselves into this quiet little town, and turned it upside down. Vien shows this tranquil town something they've never seen, nor wanted to see before. She shows them the "powers of chocolate". The way in which Vien goes about bringing this "sin" into the lives of the townspeople is what makes separates this movie from the usual blockbusters of today that feel like they require sex, drugs, and violence in order to create a good film. In "Chocolat", when Vien comes to the town with chocolate, she is seen as an evil person and her chocolate was also seen as evil. At the same time, the Mayor and the Priest are telling everyone at their congregation that sweet things, a.k.a. chocolate, are sinister and should not be consumed. "Chocolat" is a bit ironic in this sense because nowadays chocolate is something that people love and consume often. People now don't see chocolate as evil or an item of sin. Also, nowadays when people try to misconstrue their religion by interpreting it so it says what they want it to say, that is looked down upon and is seen my many people as sinister. The thing that makes the important transition in this movie of making people see that chocolate isn't evil and you should listen to yourself and not other people, is the rebellious aspect. Without out the rebellion presented by Vien, the people in this small village would never realize that they were, in a way, being brainwashed by the Mayor and the Priest. Vien showed the people in this town a whole different side to themselves that they never knew was there before. When Vien came to this town she was put-down and shut-out by almost everyone. By the end of the movie, she was practically the center of the town because of the joy she brought people simply because she gave them something they'd never had before. Even the Mayor eventually gave in and realized the error in his ways. day has some type of violence, bad language, or sexual scenes. I'm not saying I don't like some of these movies, but they always manage to overshadow the quality films, like "Chocolat", that actually send a productive message to its audience. Although this film makes a big deal out of something as little as chocolate, the point behind it all is that something different, something rebellious is being presented into a world of "normality" and repetitiveness. Let's focus for a moment on the popular movies today that are scene as the rebellious type, and compare them to "Chocolat". In the movie "The Matrix", the main characters are very rebellious. These characters propose that the world people live in today is all a figment of their imagination and that they are actually living in egg-like shell, brainwashed to believe they are living in a different world.
