Cigarette Smoking and the Body
Tobacco is consumed worldwide everyday by millions of people. Many people cannot prevent themselves from smoking because tobacco contains a drug called nicotine that makes them feel as if they need it in order to function normally. Nicotine is a substance found in tobacco. It is found in all tobacco products such as: cigarettes, pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco, and cigars. When a person smokes a tobacco product, they inhale the smoke, which contains nicotine as well as over 500 chemicals, including formaldehyde (used to preserve dead bodies), cyanide, insecticide, carbon monoxide and tar [1]. I personally think that smoking is detrimental and that it has many fatal side effects, but eventhough many people know of these effects, they still chose to smoke. For what reason? Nicotine has a few positive effects on the body. It stimulates memory and alertness, enhancing cognitive skills that require speed, reaction time, vigilance, and work performance. It acts as a mood-altering agent, it tends to alleviate boredom and reduce stress, and reduces aggressive responses to stressful events. It also tends to be an appetite suppressant, specifically decreasing the appetite for simple carbohydrates (sweets)
Smoking gives you bad breath, makes breathing harder and results in many fatal diseases. It is therefore clear, even to the most unintelligent person that being a non-smoker ensures that you live a much longer and healthier life than a smoker; so the next time you light a cigarette, think about your family, your friends and your life and ask yourself if it is worth it. Remember It only takes 3 cigarettes for a teenager to get hooked. [8] Think about it first. Women who smoke have a greater risk of premature detachment of the placenta. Once detachment has occurred, prenatal death rates also increase. This risk increases by 20% with every 1/2 pack of cigarettes smoked. Women who smoke also suffer from more reproductive tract infections, fertility and menstrual disorders, earlier menopause, and problems during pregnancy. Female smoking-related death rates have been rising. It is estimated that by the year 2020, more than I million adult females will die from tobacco-related illness.[1] The heart and circulatory system are greatly affected by cigarette smoking over a long term. Smoking is one of the leading factors of heart disease and if continued for a long period of time could lead to death. Premature coronary heart disease could lead to sudden death. Smoking causes Atherosclerosis. This is a build up of fatty deposits on the inside of the carotid artery, which can lead to blood vessel diseases and narrowing, and stiffening of blood vessels which could rupture easier. This increases cholesterol and clogging of arteries which, in turn, will lead to poor circulation to the extremities of the body and high blood pressure and a higher heart rate. At least 30% of people suffering with heart disease will end up dying. The circulatory system may be repaired with surgery but if a person's circulatory system is so far gone, it is only a matter of time before
