I must say that cinematography is a great art. It is a representative of the culture of different countries on the international level. We can get acquainted with all the traditions of this or that country, its people's ways of life by means of cinema.

Around the world, at any instant, millions of people are watching movies. They watch mainstream entertainment, serious "art films," documentaries, cartoons, experimental films, educational shorts. They sit in air-conditioned theaters, in village squares, in art museums, in college classrooms, or in their homes before a television screen.

And now I will try to do my best to give all the possible facts about cinematography, because, as we know, facts are interesting and important only as part of research programs. Then they help us ask and answer questions.

It is difficult to attribute the invention of the cinema to a single source. There was no one moment when the cinema emerged. Rather, the technology of the motion picture came about through an accumulation of contributions. These came primary from the United States, Germany, England, and France.

While western countries struggled with incompatible systems and patent disputes, the Soviet filmmaking establishment remained relatively isolated. In 1926, two inventors, P. T. Tager and A. Shorin, independently began working on sound-on-film systems. in 1929 Tager and Shorin declared their systems ready. There were many technical problems, and the first Soviet sound films were released only in March 1930. Among them Abram Room's "Plan for Great Works", Yuriy Raizman's "The Earth Thirsts", "Golden Mountains", Leonid Trauberg's "Alone".

Governmental control took different forms. The film industries of the various countries that made up the USSR were nationalized when the Soviet government seizes their property in 1919. That centralized control increased during the 1930s.

At those times photography was made on glass or metal without the use of negative and it was not possible to make at least sixteen frames in a single second. Only in 1839, Henry Fox Talbot introduced negatives made on paper. At about this same time, it became possible to print photographic images on glass lantern slides and project them. Not until 1878, however, did split-second exposure times become feasible.

It was the beginning of cinematography.

The major contribution was made by photographer Eadweard Muybridge. He was asked by ex-governor of California Leland Stanford to find a way of photographing running horses do as to facilitate the study of their gaits. Muybredge set up a row of twelve cameras. The photos recorded one-half-second intervals of movement. Muybreage later made a lantern to project moving images, but theses were drawings copied from his photographs onto a revolving disc.

After the first public film screenings in early 1896, film exhibition spread quickly in England, largerly because R. W. Paul was willing to sell projectors. R. W. Paul, a maker of photographic equipment, made copies of the Edisonn Kinetoscope and was free to sell them to anyone who wanted them because Edison had not patented the Kinetoscope outside the United States. Since Edison would supply films only to exhibitors who had lasted his own machines, Paul also had to invent a camera and make films to go with his duplicate Kinetoscopes.
