Topic: Civil Unions: a definition and an explanation of both sides of the issue
Specific Purpose: to inform my audience of both sides of the debate concerning civil unions.
Thesis Statement: We must understand the concept of civil unions and gay marriages as well as the issues that coincide with these concepts before we are able decide who is right and what is fair.

I. Civil unions are considered by the gay and lesbian community to be an important step in the road to equality for themselves as well as for their families. However, this is a very controversial issue because some believe that marriage should be reserved for heterosexual couples who are considered more likely to raise shared children.
a. According to the state of Vermont's website a civil union is a legal relationship that provides same sex couples in Vermont all the benefits, protections, and responsibilities under the
iii. The third reason that gays and lesbians push for civil unions and marriages is the belief that the official recognition will create stability and equality in their communities.
b. Allowing civil unions would thus tear at the moral fiber of our country. Expanding the definition would undoubtedly lead to a push for acceptance of polygamous and incestual marriage.
