Cloning into the Future

Clone is an organism, or group of organisms, derived from another organism by an asexual (nonsexual) reproductive process. The word clone has been applied to cells as well as to organisms, so a group of cells stemming from a single cell is also called a clone. Usually the members of a clone are identical in their inherited characteristics-that is, in their genes -except for any differences caused by mutation. Identical twins, for example, who originate from the division of a single fertilized egg, are members of a clone; whereas non-identical twins, derived from two separate fertilized eggs, are not clones.

Through recent advances in genetic engineering, scientists can isolate an individual gene (or group of genes) from one organism and grow it in another organism belonging to a different species. This technique is called cloning because it uses clones of organisms or cells. It has great economic and medical potential and is the subject of active research ("Clone").

The idea of cloning came about in the early 1900's. A German scientist named Hans Spemann first thought of the cloning methods around 1938. One of the first attempts on cloning, however, was by a scientist named Adolph Eduard Driesch. H

The benefits of cloning are plentiful and can revolutionize the world. There are certainly risks in any new technology, but in this case, benefits outweigh the risks. This new technology heralds a new era of unparalleled advancement in medicine if people will release their fears and let the benefits begin. We should not close the doors that lead to significant advances for our well being. Better yet, let us join the efforts of those who are working to make it happen. Cloning will not be a downfall to human history, but a step closer to a better society.

Plantation agriculture, decorative and gardening plants industries can benefit commercial application of plant cloning. Actually, this method has been carried out for many years, in plantations all over the world. Crops grown in this manner include banana, rubber, as well as trees grown for timber, paper and wood pulp. All these plants are clones as the planters via cuttings and other asexual artificial plant propagation methods to reproduce them ("Cloning Plants by Tissue Culture"). Plantation agriculture constitutes a vital part in the economies of the countries in which they are in as the products of these plantations are often exported. They also provide employment to the locals in the farming process, as well as in the processing of the raw material from the plants, and related industries. Growing crops in the plantation method increases efficiency, as all the plants are actually clones of a high yield variety. This in turn increases production, which in turn increases the profits to be made. Cloning, by utilizing methods such as cuttings and layering also reproduces plants grown in the gardens. Roses, and many other bushy plants are propagated in this fashion. It is oblivious to mention the flower industry - it is plain for all to see at times such as Valentine's Day and Mother's Day. As cloning goes global other commercial effects such as employment and the medical industry can benefit. The start of cloning would undoubtedly result in the growth of the already high and low biotechnology industry, which would provide a greater stability and increase of jobs in this sector. National economies would hence be strengthened. The medical developments would also provide companies with investment opportunities, even as breakthroughs occur incessantly in the field of cloning.

There are many commercial applications as well as effects with relevance to cloning. Its commercial future looks very good indeed. It should be noted that it is inextricably linked to developments or advances in the science of cloning. However, cloning is very powerful tool; just like a knife has two edges, it can be abused commercially if its use is not properly regulated ("Cloning Plants by Tissue Culture"). The end results could be disastrous. It is hoped that with proper legislation, cloning can be used to improve not only the lot of the company directors, but also that of the common man. With such good monetary prospects, it would come as no surprise if companies make cloning part of their business agenda for the next millennium.
