The embargo has caused many to flee Cuba in search of a new life in the United States. A number that today has reached one million. Those who have chosen to stay in Cuba or have had no other choice but to remain are suffering the consequences of the choices made by their leader. Having a deteriorated water supply and food shortages as a result of the embargo restrictions. Causing an in crease in the number of water borne diseases such as typhoid fever, dysentery's and viral hepatitis. The ban on the sale of foodstuffs has contributed significantly to the serious nutritional deficits of the people of Cuba. This more so evident in pregnant women and as a result the number of babies with born with low birth weight is a high. Then the senate foreign relations committee voted in March of 2000 to exempt food and medicine from all unilateral U.S. Embargoes a move passed with the backing of farm state senators. Although Cuba is the first under developed country in the world to totally wipe out hunger and malnutrition the United states suffered from the loss of prestige and power as a result of the Cold War. The loss was a force to be dealt with. Their responses to try to alleviate the situation were all in vain. Their trade embargo placed against Cuba left them to suffer from loss of economic gain and have an affair of strained diplomatic relations. With in the last two years U.S. Farmers have pressed to lift the embargo which has only shut them out of the bulk food import market of Cuba, with a value of seven hundred million in 1999 alone. Also looking for a lift on the barrier with the Castro government is the U.S. Pharmaceutical industry . In January 2000, medical equipment manufacturers held the first American Trade Fair in Cuba in four decades. Nations who were impartial and were not included in either bloc included India, Indonesia Cambodia and most of the African states. This was just the beginning.
