The Coming of Age in Mississippi, is the autobiography of Anne Moody's life and personal of her experience growing up poor in the south. The story is about a young black woman coming of age and the racism she encountered in the southern town of Centerville, Mississippi. The basis of this book is inferred from the constant indignities she suffered personally, as well as what she saw other Blacks suffering too. Her argument was that she had grown sick of how the Black people were being mistreated and killed, while others simply accepted the racial indignities, preferring to ignore and do nothing about the injustices they were enduring. Since much of American history is written from a White perspective, the reader would find it very interesting to read it from a young Black female's perspective.

The setting of her story is in Mississippi during the 1950's and 1960's. Her story is living proof of the suffering and brutality that was common on Black Americans by Whites in a time when racism was rampant in the South. It seems to be that she saw a difference in the attitudes of other Blacks in other cities and towns in the state coupled with her own personal experiences, that ultimately motivated her to getting involved in an Orga
