Communication

Analysis of Communication Processes Within the Workplace

In order to be an effective manager in the work force today, we must have a very good understanding of the various ways in which people interact and communicate with each other. It is critical that good leaders display the ability to effectively communicate with their associates and subordinates, as well as train and encourage others to demonstrate those same communication skills. By effectively doing so, they will promote both a healthy and efficient work environment that everyone will benefit from. The perspectives of effective communication requires team members to meet the challenge of learning to effectively communicate and develop together for a common goal.

The communication process in the workplace can range from simplex to complex. Simplex communication can be as simple as asking for a status of the project, to the very complex assignment of explaining the five-year strategic plan that would include detailed economic and competitive advantages. I use this method, if I need to establish my position or if I need to make a serious point. Should I want to speak with someone in a more intimate environment? I walk around my desk and sit in one of the guest chairs. This arrangement removes the boss to subordinate atmosphere and we can discuss items on and off the record. I can also hold group meetings at my round table in my office and we are all respected as contributing members of the meeting.

Eighth, there should always be supportive listening, not one-way listening. We cannot learn from or about the listener if they do not listen themselves. (Karathanos, Hillis, 2002, p22)

e a direct and guiding effect on our careers as managers.

I have notice at Verizon when supportive communication is not used effectively, two major obstacles seem to occ
