A detailed Summary of Communication


In chapter 11, Intercultural communication I found that many instances in my life related to the stereotypes and prejudice section.

After reading the paragraphs on stereotypes. I couldn't help but think back to my high school days. Sadly I stereotyped people just as much as the next person. It wasn't even intended to be something done to mean it was just the way to survive in high school. It was easier to put people into a nice little clump instead of having to get to know them individually.

It was also easier on myself to know I belonged to a group I didn't care if I was being stereotyped. I felt safer knowing that this was my group and this is where I belonged. The definition of stereotypes is a generalized second hand beli


Stereotypes and prejudices seem to go hand in hand in many instances. I would like to believe that I've never been involved in a stereotyped situation before, but this chapter made me realize how prevalent the generalizing of people in my life can be and has been. Thankfully I am trying to change that and still work on it everyday.

When I read the paragraph about prejudice I also learned that maybe not intentionally, but occasionally I am apart of prejudices. I couldn't count the number of times a friend made a racist joke and in my head I always think that's not funny, but I never say anything.
