Communications essay

Throughout the class, we have been describing communication as a transactional process. Transactional is a very key word-this is meaning more than one action involved in the process, meaning listening, speaking or use of symbols. Communication is socially negotiated, agreed upon symbols working in two or more directions, helping to communicate meaning, understanding, or explanation. An example of a socially negotiated symbol could be a table. Instead of referring to a table as a slab of material, suspended by legs with the purpose of providing a surface to eat or work on-rather, we reached a cultural and global understanding that we can refer to it as a table.

Communication is that which helps the world-go-round, and allows cultures from all different parts of the world to attempt to communicate and reach understanding of one another. One way this information is useful is in advertising in the Mass Media. Corporations pay people that are highly qualified in society with communications to help build, advertise and maintain their businesses. It is important that these people under-stand society, how we communicate, and changes that come about in communication. From one aspect, this is useful information to know how we com

It is important for the news to be edited, though you may not always agree with the stories they run, they run and edit them for a certain purpose. I think that this also puts the listener in a position: I think that it's important to be an active listener, and do not just believe everything that you hear because its coming from a news studio.

Another ad that comes to mind when I read this was ads like Stove Top, or Hamburger Helper or Rice-a-Roni. They appear to make everything look copasetic because of this product. They often show chaos (though the Explorer commercial did not), and attempt to convey the useful side of their product. The key ingredient in ads like this is just to show a relation between consumer and product.

When the news comes on, there have been editors that have edited and checked with sources to assure the accuracy of the news. They do this to prevent incorrect information. There are exceptions to this rule though. For example, when the events of September 11, 2001 were unfolding-they were providing information on the news as soon as they were learning of it, but they were also stressing the fact that they didn't know the accuracy of the news they were relaying. But generally speaking, news is learned of, checked out and then relayed.

The news is edited countless amounts of times before we preview it from the living rooms of our homes. The stories that we hear are carefully selected and edited. The media controls what we hear, when we here. The media decides what the cover stories should be, also. Certain stories would undoubtedly rank over others. For example, the American people would rather hear about the marital problems of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston then learn of Mother Theresa's life story and good deeds in India. And though Princess die was an incredible humanitarian, her efforts would reap more media coverage then Mother Theresa any day of the week.

Editing is important in a democratic society like the United States so that there is not defamation of character, and everything is accurate. It is also important that the news is correct because the citizens of the US are makin
