Compare and Contrast Vivre Sa Vie (My Life to Live) and Emporte-Moi (Set Me Free)

The films Vivre Sa Vie (My Life to Live) and Emporte-Moi (Set Me Free), are very similar when looking at the two main characters of the films, Nana and Hanna. However, the events and people surrounding the characters are different, to catch these similarities and differences throughout the second film (Emporte-Moi) it is imperative that the first film (Vivre Sa Vie) has been seen. The similarity is sprung when Hanna watches Vivre Sa Vie for the first time. Almost instantly she idolizes the main character Nana and it is then that Hanna's life begins to parallel Nana's. Both are on a search for their own identity separate from the outside forces that are trying to control them.

In the film Emporte-Moi, Hanna comes from a difficult household where her parents seem to love each other but seem hate each other just as much, if not more. Hanna's father, an unpublished poet with no other work, and cannot find a way to show his family love. Instead he is very controlling of his family. He forces Hanna to cut her hair short like a boys. He makes his wife type his works at night. Her mother is over worked, working a seamstress during the day and a typist at night for Hanna's father. While at the same time she is very depressed an

Even without seeing the movie Vivre Sa Vie the overall main idea of the movie Emporte-Moi is apparent. It can be most simply put as a comming of age story, in which a young girl struggles to take control and live her own life. However if Vivre Sa Vie has been seen it increases the meaning and dept of Emporte-Moi. Even with the cutting and vebal explaination in Emporte-Moi, it's still a great advantage to have watched Vivre Sa Vie first. There are four major scenes where Hanna's life is in extreme parallel with Nana.

The similarities of Vivre Sa Vie and Emporte-Moi are very important. Two young women searching for the same thing, and identity that they have choosen and can control. Eventhough many of the events and people surrounding the two women are very different. It is also very imporant to have the added knowledge of Vivre Sa Vie, Emporte-Moi, has a great, deeper, and more important meaning that would totally be missed without that knowledge.

Nana also has little love in her life; she feels little love for anyone. She has a child whom she has no contact with. Her friend is not really much of a friend she is the one who first introduced prostitution as a real career to Nana. She thinks that her pimp cares for her, but in the end she is just money because he sells her to another pimp and then he also shoots her. Right before she is sold and killed Nana, seems to finally have found love, she even agrees to give up prostitution. However she has realized too late that she is free to live her life but at the same time comes the responsibility to live it well.

The third and forth time are probably the two most important times Hanna's life parallels Nana's. The third time is a lose connection. Hanna is talking to her teacher about a paper she has written in which she quotes Nana's " I am responsible," speech. There is a short cut of Nana's speech, but again if Vivre Sa Vi has not been watched we do not understand the importance of this speech. At the time of this speech in the movie Nana seems to be justifying her recent actions of becoming a prostitute. While she is living her life she is also refusing to admit that any outside force can have an effect on her life. Without that knowledge, when Hanna's teacher brings it up as a problem in Hanna's paper, it could be a bit confusing. After seeing just that small clip Nana's speech seems intelligent and a good motto to live by and it's hard to understand why Hanna's teacher is a little worried by it. However if the motive behind Nana's speech is known than she is not seem as smart, and it I easy to see Hanna's teacher's problem with it. It is also easy to worry about Hanna, because she is now taking her idolization too far and she needs to find the line between a movie and real life.

The second is at Hanna's brothers band pratice, where she mimics Nana dancing in the bar. When Nana is dancing at the bar, it a once of her true free moments in the movie. She is happy smiling, laughting, not caring what others are thinking, and for once she is attracting the attention of a man who is not trying to buy her. When Hanna dances she also is at one of her truly free moments. She has no worries right then, she is not caring what other people think of her, she is not stressed about
