Computer Aided Design

An overview of Computer Aided Design (CAD).

The aim of CAD is to apply computers to both the modeling and communication of designs. There have been two different approaches - which are often used together - namely:

· at a basic level, to use computers to automate or assist in such tasks as the production of drawings or diagrams and the generation of lists of parts in a design;

· at a more advanced level, to provide new techniques which give the designer enhanced facilities to assist in the design process.

The bulk of the development in CAD (computer aided design) has been in modeling the form of products (i.e. in providing techniques to assist in the representation of form using conventional drawings or new modeling techniques) or in systems to assist in the production of diagrams and the subsequent evaluation of designs represented by these diagrams.

The driving force behind the provision of computer assistance for conventional modeling techniques has been the desire to improve the productivity of the

CAD systems are no more than computer programs (although often large and complex), perhaps using specialized computing hardware. The software normally comprises a number of different elements or functions that process the data stored in the database in different ways: model definition: for example to add geometric elements to a model of the form of a component; model manipulation: to move, copy, delete, edit or otherwise modify elements in the design model; picture generation: to generate images of the design model on a computer screen or on some hard-copy device; user interaction: to handle commands input by the user and to present output to the user about the operation of the system; database management: for the anagement of the files that make up the database; applications: these elements of the software do not modify the design model, but use it to generate information for evaluation, analysis or manufacture; utilities: a `catch-all' term for parts of the software that do not directly affect the design model, but modify the operation of the system i
