Coney Island and Its Effects On Leisure

As the industrial revolution came to a close in the late 1800's and early 1900's Americans began to search for a more leisurely lifestyle away from the factories that consumed much of their lives. Coney Island in Brooklyn was the perfect answer to their search. It offered a convenient place for the masses, rich and poor, to enjoy their time off and relax. In time Coney Island would transform itself from a quaint island with a beach and a casino, to a glamorous glowing amusement park.

In Coney's Early years, the Island was all but divided by a wall. The Eastern end was home to a rich casino, where the more well to due people spent much time. And the western end was home to a beach where the less wealthy masses gathered. The Owner of Coney Island was a man named John McKane, who would soon transform this divided Island into the recreation center of the


But this was all to come to a screetching hault on May 27, 1911, when on the day before Dreamland was to open for its 8th season the giant tower caught fire and despite the best efforts of new york firefighters, burned to the ground. Dreamland was destroyed. A man by the name of Sam Comforts then took reigns of Dreamland, hoping to reuild the once prosperous park. But before Dreamland could be reopened Comforts went bankrup, ending Dreamland. Eventually a couple of years later Dundee and Thompson would also go bankrupt and Luna Park with them. Coney Island was no more.

Coney Island may have ended but its effects on leisure and lifestyles of the people in New York are still felt today. It allowed people to leave the hard factory working life behind and enjoy the times with their families and freinds. It allowed people to live a little.
