Corruption and Deception Imagery in Hamlet

Laertes says that Ophelia should guard her virtue because like the passion is like the cankerworm that "galls the infants of the spring" and destroys "the liquid dew of youth." He suggests that Hamlet will destroy her.

Hamlet says that if a "dram of evil" is found in an action people will see it as corruption even though it may not be corrupt.

Marcellus tells the others there is something "rotten in the state of Denmark." He suggests that there is some corruption that rots away the government.


Hamlet says that those who would "make mouths" or mock his uncle before he became king now pay money to gain favor and tiny pictures as if they adore Claudius.

Ophelia sings the song in which the man may represent Hamlet. If that is so then Hamlet deceived her and treated her badly by vowing live then taking it away.

He calls Gertrude his "most seeming-virtuous queen," suggesting that she was not virtuous during their marriage and gave into the "shameful lust" of Claudius"

Hamlet says that that the law has delays and that there "is insolence in office" wherein the people with power behave without respect for the rulers or other people.
