Cosima
One would think that a person would inevitably have a similar point of view towards the world as the person who raised him. In life however, point of view is not inherited as genes are. In the novel Animal Dreams, Barbara Kingsolver, tells the story through the father, Homero, and his daughter, Cosima, who do tell of the same memories that are driven in different directions because of their own views. As the novel progresses, Homero and Cosima are affected by their difference in views and change their outlook to point in which they can both be on the same level on. One can say that they are two lines that in time will intersect. As the novel begins, Homero looks upon his children as a protector, and an inundating amount of love. As one continues to read the novel, it is evident that Homero does yearn to look at the world and at his girls with as much love as it is possible to offer. The death of his wife shaped him so that he became lost in his pain. Homero, therefore, tries not to get to attached to his daughters because the idea that he may lose them at any given moment is very prevalent in his mind. He viewed his daughters as special "patients" of his that he was to take care of in a special manne
Cosima and Homero did have their outlooks intersect at some point in the novel and after that they became somewhat parallel. The whole idea of their differences kept them apart for a long period of time that did hinder each in its own way. In the end, however, they were able to grasp their differences and comprehend each other. Cosima now after so long sees the beauty in life. Although it took her sister's death to make her fully come around. She in the end is happier than she has ever been because she sees the world as a joyous place that only gives rough pasts to people to help make them into better people in the future. This was something she finally understood because of all the experiences she endured while living in Grace. In the end she finally found her sense in life even without her sister. She learned to trust a person with out solely depending on them. She for the first time in her life was satisfied with herself and the life she was leading alongside the people she loved. She also did not expect anything different form her father anymore because he had an illness in which the past is forgotten. This tolerance of her father in her every day life proved that she finally understood him and the importance of his presence in her life. In the beginning, Cosima is presented as someone who is so affected by her past that it is difficult for her to live in the future.
