Critisism of Robert Burns

Robert Burns represented the true Scotsman who openly expressed himself. He often talked of love and how love is represented, the Church as a whole and how it was corrupted, and how the rich and poor of society was totally differently. Most critics say that the Church was Robert Burns' favorite subject to write about. However, I feel that society was his favorite subject. In this poetry he represented the middle-class of society.

Robert Burns wrote during the Romantic Age. At this time people were beginning to question society and its ways. Burns was one of the greatest poets of this time. Burns was sometimes referred to as the National Poet of Scotland. Burns lived a shortened life and by his mid twenties he had been in and out of a few love affairs. Hew spent his last days traveling to Northern England, and the Scottish Highlands to find traditional songs and ballads. Burns wrote more than 300 original songs.

One of Burns' most popular poems was "Holy Willie's Prayer" which displayed the hypocrisy of a petty, dishonest elder of the church of Scotland. William Fisher, represents the church version of Burns himself. Burns who was involved in several sexual affairs and had a daughter by one of his fathers servants. William Fisher is involved in sexual affairs, but yet is still an elder of the church. At this point in time of history, many of the citizens in Scotland were questioning the church and with poets like Burns, and poems such as "Holy Willie's Prayer", their case was getting more and more support. Curtis Hemingway, American writer, shows such corruption in the church in the Story The Scarlet Letter. William Fisher confesses to his sins and asks for forgiveness and asks God to destroy men like him and asks God not to listen to their prayers. Many people in the church are still like that today and must of been like that back then. They want everyone else to be the blame but fell that they are the exceptio
