A war to some that many feel came unresolved. United States armed forces recaptured Kuwait the strategic target that we set out for. At what cost did the United States capture that infamous target. A close cousin of mine named Rick Calderon was involved in the Desert Storm war and with his involvement my life personally changed.
I remember the day my cousin said he was going to be shipped out into the Persian Gulf, although he was many years older than me, I looked up to him like a dear brother. He came from a home with a single mother raising my cousin and his three younger sisters. He enlisted in the Marines at the age of twenty-two to find guidance in his life and help his struggling mother financially. All in all, the Bush administration's actions during the Gulf War crisis were considered to be very successful. There were those, of course, who criticized Bush for U.S. troops having to die for "oil money." However, the largest criticism over time was that Bush didn't "finish the job," by assuring that Hussein was out of power and/or assassinating him. The fact that this was the largest criticism of Bush speaks to the effectiveness to Bush's campaign and shows how demonizing Saddam Hussein truly was the best way to earn support from the American people. Rick survived through the seven months he had been in hostile territory although he will forever tribute the sanctity that other men and women fought for this great cause known as freedom.
