Difference between Pentium II & Pentium III
A detailed Summary of Difference between Pentium II & Pentium III
The purpose of this memo is to evaluate the difference between a Pentium II processor and a Pentium III processor. In addition, this memo will tell if
· Pentium II and Pentium IIIs level of cache memory to determine witch is "better or faster" for the company's needs.
· Which Cpu is desired for system boosting and will it help
· Pentium II can upgrade to the Pentium III.
What's the difference between the Pentium II and Pentium III?
The differences between the Celeron and Pentium III processors can be confusing. In addition, the Celeron chip got bad reviews when it first was introduced in 1998, and that impression has stuck in the minds of many people even though the problem was fixed by Intel in later releases of the chip. Here are the most important differences between the Pentium III and the Celeron chips coming out today:
· The Celeron chip is based on a Pentium II core while Pentium III chips are based, as you would expect, on a Pentium III core. The Pentium III core contains an enhanced instruction set and has some pipelining improvements that give it slightly better performance on normal instructions. The enhanced instruction set is only useful to programs specially coded to take advantage of it,

and there aren't yet that many that do.
· The Pentium III will have speeds from 450 till 800MHz.
· Intel manufactures Pentium III chips that run at higher clock speeds than Celeron chips. For example, the fastest Pentium IIIs might be 200 MHz (40%) faster than the fastest Celeron chips.
· The Pentium III (KNI/SIMD) needs a patch to work. Special patched will be released for Windows 98, downloadable from the Intel and Microsoft website. Which is due to a new mode, like the 'protected mode' that exists since the 386 model. The protected mode makes it possible to use instructions in parallel, simultaneously. Programs need a patch to use that mode. Windows 2000 will support the Pentium III in advance.
The only problem is to make a decision on which product/ processors to purchase. The decision is complicated due to the fact that the both are very wonderful processors. I personally, am not very shocked by the Pentium III, unless Intel provides it with more (full speed) cache memory and does not lock overclocking.
