Canberra's latitude is 149 degrees east and the longtitude is 35 degrees south. The temperatures in Canberra vary considerably from summer to winter. Canberra's main function being Australia's capital territory is government, with the parliament house being situated there.
On March 11th, 1871, an overland Telegraph Line surveyor, William Mills, discovered a river-bed spring three kilometres north of the present city and named it Alice Springs after the wife of Charles wing, and has been ever since it was annouced as Australia's capital teritory. The name 'dubbo' is of Aboriginal origin, meaning, in various dialects, 'red earth', 'foggy', 'head covering' and 'possum fur head covering'. Newcastle is a growing community with more people moving to Newcastle and away from the small town communities along the Myall Lakes. Port Hedland was discovered in 1829 but it was not until 1864 that the Pilbara's first sheep station was set up on the nearby De Grey River. The first Port Hedland jetty was commenced in 1896, it is now used as a mineral port amond other things. This Port is perhaps one of the worlds busiest mineral port in the world.
