The novel 'She's Come Undone' by Wally Lamb is a coming of age odyssey, where one girl learns about life, courage and love. We follow Dolores Price from age four to age forty, a long journey towards discovery. Her life goes through many trials and tribulations including getting raped at a young age and having to face obesity and depression. In the end , Dolores learns what life is really about: love.

Throughout the novel 'She's Come Undone', Dolores is faced with many challenges. Although a coming of age story, the novel has many underlined themes, one being love. Dolores is forced to realize the harsh realities of this world at an early age and at the same time loses her faith in love. Every time Dolores found love, something would happen to her which would bring her back to the conclusion that love does not exist. In the end, however, Dolores finds love and the power within her to believe in life. Another theme in the novel would be friendship. Dolores, through her life, meets many friends, whom help her grow as a person. One of the most significant friends would be Roberta, a next door neighbour. Roberta is the person who helps Dolores learn what life is all about and helps her become a better person. The novel


is written in 1st person, allowing the reader to see the world through the eyes of Dolores. This narrative technique is very effective for this kind of novel. The novel is purely based on the life of Dolores Price. Allowing the reader to know exactly what she is thinking during every part of her life is very effective in helping the reader develop a bond with the character. The reader then understands Dolores inside and out which helps move the novel forward. Symbolism is a great part of the novel. One of the most significant symbolic objects to Dolores Price would be the flying leg painting. This painting was given to Dolores by her mother right before her death. Throughout the novel, the picture is mentioned since Dolores always has it with her. This painting meant a lot of things to Dolores. It was symbolic of the love she had for her mother and the grief she felt for having treated her in the manner she did before her death. It also represents her past and her moving on, flying away from everything.
