1. Alan Strang embraces a horse called "Nugget". Martin Dysart, a psychiatrist, describes what he sees Alan and Nugget doing. Alan and Nugget disappear and Dysart addresses the audience, telling them about him and that he's partly feeling being a horse. Then he commences to tell a story.

2. Dysart is working on his desk, when Hesther, a magistrate, enters and asks Dysart to take Alan as a patient, because she doesn't want to be send to prison. Dysart accepts Alan, even though he can't cope with the number of patients he already has.

3. Alan arrives and Dysart tries to question him, but Alan does not answer, he starts singing advertisement songs instead. Dysart realizes that he isn't going to get any answers and tells the nurse to take Alan to his room.

4. The nurse and Alan have a conversation. Alan gets annoyed by the nurse and tells (the first time he didn't sing) the nurse to "Fuck off".

5. Dysart tells the audience about a dream: He dreams that he's a priest in Homeric Greece. He slices children up and takes out their organs. 34. Alan tells Dysart that Equus can see everything what he does. Alan retells the night he stabbed out the horses eyes.

22. Dysart addresses the audience and talks about the horse. He claims that he can hear the horses talking. Dora appears and tells Alan to stop staring at her. She slaps him and Dysart tells her to leave.

9. Dysart and Alan have a conversation. Dysart tries to find out about Alan's nightmare and the word "Ek". Alan doesn't answer and instead questions Dysart. Because Alan starts singing again Dysart tells him to leave.

30. Alan, Jill and Frank stand at the bus stop and talk. Frank's excuse for being at the movies is that he was there for a business meeting.

26. Dysart find a letter in which Alan wrote that everything he said was true.

13. Dysart listens to the tape, from the tape recorder, Alan talked on. On the tape Alan talks about how he loved riding the horse on the beach. And he says how he hates being ordered around all the time; he wants to be a cowboy, because they're free.
