Margaret Fuller had many ideas that seemed relevant to Emerson's. Even more so, though, I found much of what she said to be true even today. The conviction and degradation of woman has been amongst us since the beginning of recorded history. Perhaps this started with the interpretation of the bible. Fuller makes several references to the bible, much like Emerson. In this past century woman have made the largest advancements towards equality than ever before. It is important to remember that though woman are closer than ever before, they are still not given equal rights in all instances. Many men, mostly through tradition in my opinion, still find it the woman's place to cook and clean. It is the stereotypical man's role to support a family financially. It is only in recent times that woman have been able to "step out of the kitchen," and into the

working world previously deemed for man alone.
Change, real change, is nowhere in the foreseeable future. These ideas of hypocrisy and oppression are embedded deep with in our society. It will take a long, long, time for these traditions to be up-rooted. Finally, it is not words on paper that make a difference. They are a foundation in which we can use for guidance, as many use the bible, but in the end it is the actions of people that really count.
Having read only small portions of Emerson's writings, I am able to say that I am most reminded of Emerson's essay on "self-reliance" when reading "The Great Lawsuit." Fuller mentions that women must break away from this "mold" that has been made for women by man. They must think for themselves and not let themselves rely on others.
