A detailed Summary of The Hitchhiker


In my search for a short story with stranger in the village theme, my finds came up short in the fact that American Authors wrote none of the pieces I enjoyed. But what I did come up with was a wonderful piece about a writer's interaction with an out of town stranger who ends up saving the day.

One-day a recently successful writer was driving up to London in his big new BMW 3.3LI when he saw a hitchhiker at the side of the road whom was also headed to London. Knowing what it was like to be standing alone on a country road watching the cars go by, he gladly let the man into his car and together they continued on to London.

Along the way, a conversation broke out between the writer and the hitchhiker. After a while, the highlight of their topic was about the writer's car. The hitchhiker did not


Unlike other Roald Dahl's stories, this one ended on a happy note, which is very rare. This did not make the story any less successful. Instead, it makes the reader happy to find out that the horrible policeman was not able to charge the writer.

As the writer and the hitchhiker continued with their journey, the writer kept asking questions about the hitchhiker's career. He finally found out after the hitchhiker started miraculously taking things out of his pocket that belonged to him. The hitchhiker told the writer he was actually a wandering fingersmith, not to be confused with a petty pickpocket.
