Sonnet 73 has lyric poem of fourteen lines with a formal rhyme scheme. Each line of the poem are expressing different aspects of a single thought, mood, or feeling, and finally resolved in the last lines two lines of the poem. The poem is figuring a person who realizes that his time is short, and he is about to die; then, knowing his condition, he expected that his friends should love him even more. Through the type of meter, and rhyme, this sonnet has a type of English sonnet or Shakespearean.
Since the sonnet 73 has an iambic pentameter and the abab cdcd efef gg rhyme scheme, this sonnet has a type of English or Shakespearean. In term of the structure of poem, this poem are quit similar with other Shakespearean poems: it has fourteen lyric of line, and it is divided into three quatrain and one caplet. Analyzing from the stressed and unstressed words, this poem has type of iambic pentameter because the stressed and unstressed words is alternating, and if we sum up all of syllables, they always come up with five pairs; five is stressed and five is unstressed. For example, we can see from the first line of the poem: That time/ of year / thou mayst / in me behold. That, of, thou, in, and be must be pronounced unstre

ssed, on the other hand, time, year, mayst, me, and hold must be pronounced stressed. Furthermore, looking from the words at the end of the lyric, we can know that this sonnet has the abab cdcd efef gg rhyme scheme. The last words in first quatrain, for instance, "behold," "hang," "cold," "sang," they have the same pattern of rhymes scheme of abab. The second quatrain, which has ended words of day, "west", "fire", and "lie", has a pattern of cdcd. Furthermore, the third quatrain, which has ended word "fire," "lie," "expire," and "by," has a pattern of efef. Finally, the word in caplet "long," and "strong" has a pattern of gg. Through this explanation, it is clear that the sonnet 73 can be categorized as a Shakespearean sonnet.
According to the type, meter, and rhyme scheme, Sonnet 73 has characteristic of Shakespearean sonnets. Even though the first three quatrains is talking about the death, the poem is ended with a happy ending. As an old man in the first three quatrains, he talks nothing but his death. At the end in the caplet, he gives a new insight how he views his death. His desired to be loved by his friends has changed his view about death from negative side to positive side by relating it with love.
