'The Joy Luck Club' 2

The Chinese respect and disciplin is much different then the American ways of society today. To contrast these two countries and lifestyles, examples from the book 'The Joy Luck Club' written by Amy Tan describes the Chinese society and my own experiences of living in America gives me the knowledge of the American society. The main overview of this topic will stress how much disciplin and respect the Chinese have compared to the average American. Many times elders in America say how things today are "not just the way it used to be." People don't respect others and they don't act appropriatly in the appropriate places. For example, teens arguing with adults, swearing at them and showing off nasty gestures was probably not tolorated during the time when these elders were growing up. Situations like this were probably handled differently during that time also. Today, kids need to have counseling and talk about their problems and frustrations. Forty-Fifty years ago the kids would be slapped up and set strait. The old way is the right way, but that has dissapeared. So things have changed. Not as much for the Chinese though. Why is it that we haven't heard about two kids killing fifteen students just f

One character in the book 'The Joy Luck Club' had to put up with her mothers dissaproval of most everything in her life. The mother dissaproved of every boyfriend of her daughters and of every job she took on. The daughter didn't ever question the opinions of her mother. This is because of the awsome respect the daughter had for her mother. The daughter could have argued with her mother consistantly or she could of grudged against her mother, but she chose to listen to her mother. In America there is many people who live with great respect, but the general view of us shows, from so many examples, that respect is lost and dicsipline isn't there. This general view is because of the many who reach the statistics of crime. Surley the are people in China who complete the same types of acts that the people in the U.S do; it is though, the large number of people in America that create the image compare to a much lesser number in China.

Another general idea that is different in China then in America is that the names given to babies have meanings towards the family spiritualy or emotionaly. In The Joy Luck Club, each name seemed to have a meaning. The two twins that were givin up were named Chwun Yu and Chwun Hwa meaning Spring rain and Spring flower respectively. The father named these two twins this because they were born in the spring and the rain becomes before the flower. Also, a character named Waverly Place Jong was named after the street she lived on, Waverly Place, which shows that where they lived was important to the family. There is some similarity in America since my name, Matthew, means a gift from God. Although, it is not understandable to se some of the names that are around. These names shall not be announced because there is no reason for trashing a person just for the
