The Miller's Tale

In the Miller's Tale by Geoffrey Chaucer, one of the character that I found interesting is Nicholas. He was the student of a rich old carpenter named John. The carpenter happened to marry to a young woman named Alison who had an affair with Nicholas. Nicholas was described as a smart young man but a very cunning character. He would trick his teacher in order to be able to get Alison. Nicholas tricked John into thinking that Noah's flood is coming again. Being a smart man, Nicholas began his trick by pretending to be sick and dying. Alison who also felt in love with Nicholas played along in the scenario. Nicholas told John:

I have discovered through astrology,

And studying the moon that shines so bright

That Monday next, a quarter through the night,

A rain will fall, and such a mad, wild spate

That Noah's flood was never half so great.

This world, in less time than an hour

Shall drown entirely in that hideous shower

Yes, every man shall drown and lose his life. (305-314)

The love that Nicholas had, motivated him to betray John, his teacher. It is showed from the above passage that he lied to John. John immediately made a preparation by fastening several boats onto his roof. Although Nichol

Nicholas was happy since his first trick was succeeded. Moreover, he was never satisfied with what he had achieved. He wanted to make another attempt. Nicholas felt that his cleverness would trick Absolom for the second time. He was confident that the second attempt would be successful. When Absolom returned for another kiss, Nicholas put his backside out of the window. This time, Absolom was ready with a red-hot colter and stroked it to Nicholas buttock.

If I without discourtesy might quit this board,...

To be gone from this bench and stand by you there,

Lay bare, the iron so scorched him where he sat.

At this point, he started not being honest to himself and the Lord Bercilak. He wanted to use the green belt in order to protect himself from the Green Knight. He only thought of himself that made him a human. Sir Gawain still had fears of losing his life in the challenge. This showed that although Sir Gawain was trying to be the perfect knight, he was just a normal person who still made mistakes, and sometimes could be dishonest.

My body, but for your blood, is barren of worth;

In contrast with the above passage, the second character that I found interesting is Sir Gawain from the poem of Sir Gawain and The Green Knight. Sir Gawain was known as a loyal, brave and honest noble knight. Even though he was known as a perfect knight, or at least he tried to, he still had flaws that
