The Miller's Tale, which proceeds the Knight's Tale, is a story about men in love with the same woman. This tale begins when an astrology student named Nicholas takes up lodging with a wealthy, old carpenter named John. John is married to a beautiful 18 year old girl, Alison. John is jealous when Alison socializes with other men because he is afraid he will lose her. John is unaware that Nicholas is in love with Alison. While John is gone on a trip to Osney, Nicholas proclaims his love to Alison and begs her to satisfy him. Alison refuses because John is her husband and she should be faithful to him, but Nicholas does not give in until Alison threatens to cry for help. She admits that she loves him and they agree that they have to make a plan to get rid of her husband. Another problem occurs when the parish clerk Absalom falls in live with the carpenter's wife during his clerical duties. Alison, however, ignores Absalom because she is in love with Nicholas.

In the darkness of the night, Alison sticks her posterior out the window for Absalom to kiss. Absalom is very insulted by this act and returns to seek revenge. He now returns to the same window to beg for another kiss, but this time he has brought a hot branding iron with him that he has obtained from a blacksmith. Nicholas, who got up to relieve himself, likes to outsmart those in love with Alison. He wants to see if he can trick Absalom into kissing his naked posterior also. Nicholas sticks his rear out the window and further insults Absalom when he farts, since Absalom is squeamish about farting. Absalom brands Nicholas' rear with a branding iron and Nicholas screams "Help! Water! Water!". John who is sleeping in the kneading tub believes the flood has come. He then cuts his cord and falls to the floor, breaking his arm. Nicholas, who is covered up by now, and Alison tell the neighbors, who have gathered due to commotion, that John was so afraid of Noah's flood he bought the tubs and hung them from the rafters.
