The Red Badge of Courage is the tale of a young American in the Civil War. Our male lead is Henry Fleming. A new recruit in a new regiment coming from New York. Henry has to wait a long time to see action. When he does, he withstands his first test. In his second, all of the mental planing that he has done is of no use: he deserts. After hooking up with a group of wounded soldiers, and seeing a friend die in a most unpatriotic manor, Henry is led back to his regiment. He is shocked to be accepted back so readily. No one realized he fled in such a cowardly way. When he goes into battle again, he proves to himself that he can stay and fight. He achieves manhood in his own mind.

Henry is the most interesting of the characters in the book. This probably stems from the fact that he is the only dynamic character in the book. My attraction to Henry is all of the thought that he gives an issue. Henry reminds me of myself. So much of his thoughts, though, are idle speculation. He has no basis for thinking what does half the time. Henry has been raised in an area where his physical and emotional limits have not been tested. The war gives him an opportunity to do so. The setting to this story is key. In the beginning of the story, the setting is the bank of a river, and that represents the journey he is undertaking. Not just his enlistment, but the ever- moving journey of his life. He is going to go and do something. During the rest of the story, he is in the forest. This is important, because the density represents his fears, and the complexity of emotions that he is feeling. The story ends on a field of battle, where the open stances represent open possibilities for Henry's future. The use of "Vegetables" represents the Tranendentalism in the book. The scenery also is representative of the country at that time. One small usage of the city, but mostly rural.

Henry's conflict is always with himself. The fact that it took place on a battlefield is coincidental. Henry fights is self-confidence. When he is faced with the prospect that he might not stack up to the expectations that he has placed on himself (with no backing to place these ideas) it almost ruins him. He must fight to save his self-impressions.

As a whole, I hated the book. I thought that the style of writing was out of date, and that the use of slurs got in the way that they were trying to make. I do respect
