The theme of Carl Lapp's poem THE STETHOSCOPE'S SONG is how our perception of a person on their occupation is only one dimensional and not accurate. The point Carl Lapp makes is that physicians are human with whimsical moments and are not only unemotional geniuses. Physicians, like most people have a warm, caring and emotional side. Their emotional sid eis not always visible and does not always fit our stereotype of a physician. Physicians also have doubts about their sanity and need help on how to cope with pressures like the majority of us do. They are able to accomplish and cope with their work by being able to see more than just the disease. Then try to find a source of inspiration, to ba able to gain satisfaction to encourage them to reach higher. The poem is twelve lines in length and arranged in three end rhymed quatrains. The poet uses several diff

erent types of metrical feet with the emphasis on the imbic. The first two quatrains are organized with two enjambments each. Each enjambment contains a separate image or point of vieew. The rhyme scheme is that of exact rhymes, and the rhyme implies a direct relationship such as "words" and "absurd". The poet is speaking in a third person point of view going from general in the first quatrain to very personal in the third quatrain. The diction of the speaker is elevated with the tone being explanatory and a little whimsical. The speaker is addressing one of his peers, us. In the first quatrain, the speaker speaks from a third person point of view in general terms and gives us two images. The first image is our typical perception of a physician, the second image is what a musician would hear, not a physician. The last sentence of the quatrain reflects our
