Who has seen the wind
Throughout life people have been trying to prove the existence of God. People have discovered that there are only connections to God that can prove the existence of God. These connections are not like the every day connections that one may see, such as a physical connection. The connection, which leads to God, is much more spiritual and most of the time it is not physical. One may experience this spiritual connection and may not even be aware of its significance and might even think that it is just a feeling. In the novel Who Has Seen the Wind the feeling experienced by Brian is an awareness of a connection to God, this is seen through Brian's growing up (discovering ones self), influences of the Young Ben, and the experiences of death. At first the feeling was just an awareness of not knowing the difference of right and wrong, but as Brian grows up he discovers that the feeling is much more. The novel opens by describing the scenery, then gets into describing Brian's life as he matures. To Brian at the beginning of the novel, the feeling is just something that he feels when something important happens to him. Brian's knowledge of the world is necessarily limited that is why he does not realize that whatever event is
of death, a fear that life is insignificant. Now, after his father's death, the fear is absent. Brian is able to accept much more calmly the mystery of death and its place in the scheme of things: taking place, when he gets the feeling, it is not important to him. During Brian's first experience of the prairie, it seems he is experiencing a time of innocence. Brian starts noticing the scenery around him, and realizes that it is not insignificant, "The hum of telephone wires along the road, the ring of hidden crickets, the stitching sound of grasshoppers, the sudden relief of a meadow lark's song, were deliciously strange to him" (Mitchell 10). In that Trying to recapture the old feeling, he goes to see Saint Sammy, but the man's religious ravings serve only to sadden him. Brian has changed. The change is a step toward maturity. The child, preoccupied with his own feelings, has become a young man whose eyes are turned toward society. People were forever born; people forever died, and never were again. Fathers died and sons were born; the prairie was forever, with its wind whispering through the long, dead grasses, through the long and endless silence. Winter came and spring and fall, then summer and winter again; the sun rose and set again, and everything that was once -was again-forever and forever. But for man, the prairie whispered-never-never. For Brian's father-never (Mitchell 239).
