1963 A Wrong Choice
Americans should allow prayer back in public schools. Since 1963, when we banned prayer, dropout rates, juvenile crimes, and teen pregnancies have increased. Also, academic scores have decreased. These are results from one action - prayer being banned. We should guarantee students and teachers their constitutional right of freedom of speech and religion. Everyone should have the right to choose when and where the worship. Studies show that since the court decision in 1963 banned prayer, dropout rates have increased. The numbers vary from school to school, but in one Texas City, 30% more students dropped out in 1993 than in 1963. This study shows that in schools where students ban together and pray in groups the dropout rate is much smaller - only 5% - 10%. This rate is proportional to support and encouragement a student is given. If a student feels he or she has no where to turn, then they might turn away from all authority and decide no one cares.
Academic scores have suffered as well. In the study in South Carolina mentioned above, the result was academic scores were higher in school A. Students from school A report that praying before a test gave them a sense of peace and helped them relax for the test. In school B, experienced more stress before an exam because they had no way to calm their worries. State testing scores were also higher than the school who had little religious activities. 0's, 40% of students studied committed fewer juvenile crimes than in the early 1990's. Lack of morals and values are major reasons for the increase in crime. Juvenile crimes increase as lack of support decreases. A 1991 study shows that in schools where strong support groups hold students accountable for their actions, there is a lower tendency toward criminal behavior. One student is quoted saying "When [my teacher] asks about me and prays for me I feel that someone cares and is concerned about me." With all the pressures on teenagers in the 1990's
